It’s #bookqw and Rivley ignores most ‘people’…except the new kitchen help.
More from my story in Love at Dawn, Falling into Place:
Rivley carried his meal to a spot with a view of the kitchen door and sat. He didn’t know Mary Clare at all. Why push Daeryn when it might be for naught and cause a rift?
Within seconds, Mary Clare emerged, said, “Excuse me,” and added rolls to the bowl, as if shoving aside men twice her size was a daily occurrence.
“Can you sneak me out some cake?” a bloke asked her.
Mary Clare laughed and walked away, leaving the grumbly worker to stalk back to his chair.
Rivley found himself grinning at the redhead’s alpha manner.
“What has you smiling for once?” asked Famil, who led the day guard team. She scooted into the next chair and began eating.
Neck heating, Rivley ducked his chin and spooned up squash. “I smile,” he muttered.
Famil laughed softly. “You are the most solemn person I know. Good for a guard. Well, if we were guarding people. Half the staff are afraid to approach you.” When he didn’t respond, she added, “Fancy a mating dance with that little Knack-bearer?”
Heck, secrets didn’t last long in this community. Even when there wasn’t anything to keep secret. Famil, twice his twenty years, probably had a better sense than he would. “You think she’s a Knack-bearer?”
“Not a ’cambire, that’s for sure. She’s sisters with the other redheads who work here, right?”
There were more than one?
“Like them, could be a grower Knack or a human,” Famil continued. “It doesn’t always pass down.”
Rivley nodded. He couldn’t be interested. Not until he and Daeryn resolved their gildan.

On a personal note:
It’s still springtime in the Rockies for us.
We’ve had a couple of snows, but days in the 60s have melted all but the shadiest places away.
And that leaves us…more downed tree slash to deal with. The local firefighters are still at work on the town-wide mitigation, and have been jumping between shady areas like ours and properties that get more sun, so have no snow. They should return to remove these large limbs to be chipped.
They’ve tried to leave the log rounds with us and our neighbor…but anyone see the problem?
Most of this is too big to fit into our woodstoves. Also, it’s more wood than we can keep after our personal mitigation work to earn our certificate to appease our homeowners insurance. We’ve given this wood to a friend in town with a chainsaw. Each day we do a little more and then retreat to sack out with Skipper, who believes his wood fire happens by magic!
It’s been six months of cutting and, honestly, the disruption is wearing on my neighbors and us. I’m anxious to have it done so I can put down the wildflower seed I’ve purchased before the spring rains.
