More from Chapter 8:
Stomach roiling, Luna blinked back unexpected tears. A blue glow flared and filled the rectangular opening to the upper level of the shed.
“This is incredible.” Salm’s hushed words carried from above.
She pulled the shed door shut before she crept up the stairs. She didn’t cross the threshold. That was forbidden. “Salm,” she called under her breath.
“C’mere.” He waved her in. “Plenty of room in here to store the dresser and anything else you desire.”
Oh, if Papa woke and discovered they’d opened the hatch…or realized something about it was amiss! Or if Stella found them. She wouldn’t be able to keep this secret.
“Salm,” she said a mite louder. In the dim light of Salm’s glowing fingers and the sunlight around the edges of a sagging curtain, she made out the familiar, shrouded shapes. Her heart wrenched.
“Just need to move aside—” He tugged off a sheet. “Hoy, a telescope, a nice refractor.” He flashed a grin to her. “Did you…” A frown formed. “What’s wrong?”
Looking over her shoulder, she beckoned him, and he came to the doorway. “We’re not allowed,” she whispered. “How did you get in here?”
“It wasn’t locked. The lock was hanging on the hasp, unlatched, if you’re thinking I magicked it. I suspect someone was afraid the old thing wouldn’t open again. It needs some graphite. Your dad doesn’t want Stella in here?”
“He doesn’t want any of us in here. This was my mother’s room, her studio.” Yet, even with the threat of her father’s ire, Luna couldn’t resist looking.
