It’s #BookQW and when my heroine ‘simmers’, my hero is clueless.

For a second week, Book Quote Wednesday has chosen I word I rarely use. I must broaden my vocabulary! 😉

More from Chapter 15 to see what’s causing Luna’s upset:

Luna spun away and, arms crossed, paced the small salon before turning back to him. “You turn nineteenth year in a few weeks. In my district, we can bond when both are nineteenth year, with no parental permission needed.”

Aye, October seventh wasn’t long to wait. But the Isle of Giuthas rules required waiting until twentieth year for bonding, preceded by a year of prebonding. If he wished to work on the isle’s Seas habitat, going against the Giuthas council wouldn’t look good, not to mention Pop was an elder. However, prebonding in either district would prevent trouble if they were caught merging magic.

“Bonds are difficult to break, but not impossible,” she said quietly. “If you don’t want your parents to be angry, I’m willing to bond.”

Salm threw his hands in the air again. “You’re impossible. You won’t agree to live on a ship, but you suggest bonding with me so we can sleep together and not make my mother mad?”

Luna’s face made it clear that she was upset. “You’re right. I’m not thinking straight. That’s a terrible plan. I’m just going to get your hopes up.”

“Let’s—” Am I really suggesting this? “Let’s think on this a mite, lass. We have several weeks, regardless.” He busied himself with poking a fish fillet. It was done.

Luna had turned on the burner under a frypan with butter in it. She kept her head down—clearly still simmering—and whipped the eggs once more, vigorously.

He put a lid over the fish. He couldn’t take it if she thought getting their own ship was off the table… Nay, I canna ask her again. Best to talk to Manta before he blurted something he regretted. “I’ll just, uh, go to the bakery for more bread while you cook those,” he said.

Gaze on her eggs, Luna gave a small nod.

He waited a beat, but she didn’t look up. What did I say wrong this time?
