The flying wizards dove to the ground, gusts rising from their huge wings. When the last was down, he shouted, “Clear.”
Hands lifted, and a rumble shook the ground. Then the stream split open. Light burst skyward, water crashed over the banks and tree roots snaked in ever-branching tangles.
Fern stumbled back, clutching at Dad. This was the rip they hoped to fix? This crevasse?
The wizards surged forward, magic streaming from their hands. The Forest wizards threw walls of yellow magic to block the waves, while others thrust various blue magics to the water. In the chaos, emerald-green energy lassoed the out-of-control roots—Beri’s energy.
Fern blinked in surprise. She’d known he was a talented apprentice, passing all his trials, but he was working with the adults? Pride swelled for him, tangled with a bit of guilt. She shouldn’t have grumbled that he was needed tonight.
Beri corralled the rampant roots alongside the elder in charge of the Pines, Lady Pina. The tall, thin woman, who’d seemed robust a few weeks ago when Fern first met her, looked frazzled tonight. Her lined face was pinched, her knobby fingers curled and trembling as her orange magic released. Her thin streams of pale light pushed the roots underground again.
The wizards calmed the water to more like a stream, and Fern could tell the rip was actually along one side of it. The water tumbled down and up a series of rocky drops that didn’t match up with the heaved ground on the broken side. An ice-blue mist rose off the water, different colors of magic knotted within it.

A shortage of wizards and magic on this hidden island overworks and tangles what magic does exist, dangerously opening rips in the shield hiding these winged wizards from the modern world.
