We’ve had a wild honeybee hive living in our cabin’s fireplace for over ten years.
No, they don’t get inside, even before we installed a woodburing stove with a sealed stovepipe to meet the local clean air requirements.
They come and go. Last year they swarmed. After the flood, I planted wildflowers, as much for me as for them. I have a bee garden statue made by a local artist.
Can you tell where this is going? I’m rather upset about the deaths of millions of honeybees in South Carolina. That pesticide wasn’t mosquito-specific. How many other millions of insects also died–ones that help control the harmful bugs in nature?
Ok, enough of a rant. It’s time to do my small part to raise bee-awareness. I’m no expert, but others are, and have been working towards this goal for years. I don’t often talk about it, but I have a nature blog. The Squirrel Nutwork. It’s over there on the sidebar, too. –>
This week we’re sharing photos of bees and the plants they love–ones you can grow to help bees.
