Meadow Magic ~or~ Wildflowers and Winged Boys

Winner of the 2009 Lone Star Writing Competition YA Category

The first book in the Emerald Isle series introduces readers to the hidden Sapaksan enclave along with Fern.  After years of visiting her Gran via a portal that Fern refuses to admit must be activated by magic, Fern knows only a little about the family land her mom always referred to as a farm.  The Meadows fill a valley in the middle of an island in the Irish Sea, and are more like overgrown fields than a farm.

Though Gran talks about other families living on the island, there are no roads or telephones and no one comes to visit.  Until the year Fern turns sixteen, and then the man brings bad news.  They must restore the Meadows to its natural lushness, or lose the land.

Fern and Gran work for a year replanting native plants.  Then days before their inspection, Beri flies—yes, flies—into Fern’s life, and nothing is ever the same.
