It’s #bookqw and one girl’s ‘drink’ is not a wizard’s delight.

Excerpt from Chapter 10:

“Are you hungry?” asked Fern.

“Aye, I have nae eaten yet today. Do you keep your stores here?”

“Aye, er, yes,” she said, shaking her head. “In the kitchen.” She led him to the back of the house and flung open the refrigerator. Her colas were in the back, and now she was dying for one. “Here.” She handed Beri a can. “I like to keep my food simple, even though Mom hates it.” She popped the top on hers and slung back a long drink.

Beri copied her.

Seconds later, his eyes bugged. Frantically, he looked around, yanked open the back door and bolted outside.

Dammit, I’ve given him something poisonous to them. Fern ran after him and pounded his back as Beri doubled over spitting, coughing and gasping for air.

“What’s wrong? Are you allergic? Do I need to get a doctor? A—” She cast about for the words Gran would use. “Are you ill? Do you need a healer?”

“Nae,” he choked out. “Water.”

“Oh, right.” She dashed inside and sloshed water into a glass and ran out again.

He gulped a mouthful, swished it about and spit it to the side. Then he downed the rest. “What,” he finally said, “was that foul liquid?”

“Pop.” Was that the problem? He’d never had one?

“You like this pop, I ken.”

“Yeah. I have one every morning.” And every afternoon.

“How do you take to its acrid flavor? And the”—he fluttered his fingers on each side of his face—“the fizz up your nose?”

She stifled a laugh. “Oops. It’s not supposed to go up your nose. Sorry. I bet you were surprised and inhaled it. Maybe if you drink it slower next…”

He raised a brow at her suggestion.

“We have other food.”
