It’s #BookQW and Cor ‘eat’s up whatever wins him the most points.

Excerpt from Chapter 14:

When Dad returned her to Hillux so she could go home, Cor was sweeping the kitchen, Hilda chasing his heels and wheeking. He was ignoring the begging guinea pig—but then, he had his earbuds in. He lifted his chin when he saw her, then magicked the dustpan to his hand and collected the pile of dirt and hair.

Nice. This would help Gran, but she pointed to her own ear to get him to remove his earbuds. He did, pipes blaring a lively tune before he turned the music off.

“What was that?”

“Celtic folk tunes?”

Huh, that wasn’t what she’d expected his music to be. “Did you feed her?”

Hilda stepped on his now-still foot. “A little,” he admitted. “Carrots.”

“How many?”

“Um, four. But we shared the first.”

Fern picked up the guinea pig. “You’ve had today’s ration and tomorrow’s.” She tapped Hilda’s pink nose. “It’s hay for you for the rest of the day.” She put her in her basket under the counter. Probably he was checking out the fridge when Hilda started begging. “Have you eaten since yesterday?”

“Other than Lady Pina’s lunch today, I brought protein bars. That gets old quick.”

She took a cloth-wrapped sandwich from her bag. “Here. Leftovers from what my dad made for dinner.”

He peeked at the sandwich. “Sprouts, tomato and cheese?”

“Yeah, I’m vegetarian. Are you?”

“No.” He took a bite and chewed with an appreciative nod. “But I could be. Would that help convince Lady Pina?”

Fern rolled her eyes. “No, you can’t lie.”

He shrugged. “Wouldn’t be a lie. Just an eating preference while I’m on an island where it’s a thing.”

“It’s not a thing with everyone, but I’m glad you’re using her name.” She told him what Lady Mimosa had said about Lady Pina valuing people who acted on their plans.

Cor brightened. “I got your pond plants planted, and more bee syrup is cooling in the fridge. Also, it’s time to put the mouse guards on the hives, so I found them in the bee shed and did that.”

He had moved fast.
