More of the excerpt from Chapter 23, in Eve’s point of view:
Sabein removed my cape and pointed me to a chair in front of the fire. Then she crooked her finger at Quinn. “Next.”
It wasn’t a question, and Quinn knew it. He rose, took my place, and she began wetting and combing through his mass of curly hair.
“So, Minister Quinn? What next?”
“Just Quinn, please. I have been…discussing plans with Quaene.”
“Surely you can come up with a better answer than that.”
Evard, Trist and I sat back to watch the master at work. Sabein cut Quinn’s hair, asked questions, and he answered. Her technique wasn’t anything a stranger would recognize. Quinn certainly didn’t. He probably thought—if he gave any thought at all to his actions—he just wanted to please the beautiful Sabein.
Indeed, that might have been the case, if Sabein hadn’t been wearing all of her jewelry. Her Zeffirite crystal jewelry. Earrings sparkled with crystals from a quarter of an inch to an inch long, as did necklaces draped high and low. Five of her ten fingers bore rings. But most impressive of all was the cuff she wore around her left upper arm. A three-inch-long, inch-wide, deep-gold crystal sat affixed to the metal. I’d learned a mere twenty years ago that this crystal was the largest in the community. Sabein never took it off.
Quinn didn’t stand a chance at concealing information Sabein wanted. He confirmed their rank, a little background and that he and Quaene must resume their command of G47.
“We’ll make our move Friday. Two days to prepare. My pro-tech will review my system while our bodyguards complete defensive exercises, then I’ll train them in Lacuna for added security. Afterwards, we’ll take another furtive trip to Dome to learn the exact status of the recalled ’torgs.”
Evard and I shot looks to Quinn and then each other. “Bloody fantastic,” Evard breathed, but I hushed him. I had to hear the next phase of their plans. Things were moving fast, much faster than he’d let on last night.
