It’s #bookqw and ‘finally’ Rivley finds a special someone!

(And ‘finally’ our anthology is out!)

More from my short story, Falling into Place:

But Rivley wanted to walk into the dark with Mary Clare. Every time he came close to her, his excitement built. Finally, she murmured apologetically that she should return to the kitchen. Yet, she slipped her hand into his as they walked the long way down the row to the farm road.

They stopped in the shadows of the bunkhouse, out of sight of the farmhouse and a few workers crossing the yard. He put his arms around her, and in seconds, their lips met. Opened. His tongue teased over hers, which traced his lips before returning to his. Like the burst of a tail wind, their lips and tongues worked in a frenzy, and he clung to her like the drop would kill him.

At last, he parted for a breath. “It’s so…exciting,” he murmured. “I haven’t felt this way in a long time.” He should tell her why he hadn’t courted anyone in two years, about the gildan. Why this could go only so far… What am I thinking? It’s a kiss, not a life-mate commitment.

Mary Clare looked up at him with unfocused eyes. “What? Oh—” She bit her lip and pressed fingers to her forehead.

Something was wrong. He could see it in her face, how her manner had changed… She felt stiff against him now. He should let her go, but he didn’t want to. She wasn’t pulling away. “Change your mind about kissing?” he asked, trying to do so lightly.

“Not that.” She stroked his shoulder. “That was the most wonderful kiss. I’d love to continue, but I’m on trial for this job, and Mrs. Betsy must expect me. I can’t bungle this.”

“Can I see you later?” he blurted, surprising himself. “If you want to…”

“I do,” she said quickly.

“I’d like to tell you…uh, trade more about ourselves. In the past, I grew up in the same shire as those I’ve courted.” Great Creator, did he just say courted?
