It’s #BookQW and an ‘order’ cannot be ignored!

In honor of the release of the 4th novel in The Windborne series, The Witch of the Meadows ebook is free for a week. More from Chapter 23 of The Witch of the Meadows:

Laughing, Beri plopped next to Fern.

“What’s happening?” she asked in a hushed voice.

“Ah, she is doing something twitchy to him. Something I prefer not to ask about, you ken.” Beri petted Hilda, and she churred for him. He leaned in closer, putting his arm on the couch behind Fern.

Aw, just being beside him was nice. If they got Mom to agree to this prebonding, it would be like having a boyfriend. Wait a sec. Not like having a boyfriend, it would be having a boyfriend. Her first boyfriend. Without quite meaning to, she leaned into Beri, and his arm slipped onto her shoulders. He’d be nearby when she came to Gran’s…or would he? His apprenticeships and trials might take him elsewhere—

“Don’t you dare,” gasped Raven, glaring over Willow’s head. “Willow, mind Beri.”

“What?” Willow whirled to them, and abruptly Raven stopped his gyrations. “Holding hands only!” She punctuated the order with a poke to Beri’s chest.

He shifted a few inches away and eased his arm down to his side. “Curses, I didna figure my friends for chaperones.”

Raven’s steely gaze skimmed over her—a relief—and settled on Beri. “We wouldn’t need to be chaperones if you didn’t need them.”

“Beri.” Willow tapped him again. “Remember, if you break the rules while we’re present, we also will be punished.”

“Right,” said Raven. “I don’t wish my power quashed at seventeenth year.”

Willow met Fern’s gaze and mouthed, “Locked up.”

“I ken,” Beri grumbled. “Did you nae find these feelings irresistible in the beginning?”

Willow and Raven looked at each other and burst out laughing.

Beri shook his head and looked at Fern. “Can I hold your hand? No magic or anything else?”

She slid it over. “Yeah, we can try that. But I’m warning you, I don’t have much more control than I did fifteen minutes ago.”

“That’s what I’m hoping,” he said with a grin.
