Lady Soila threw her hands up. “Young’uns these days never listen. Go ahead. In less than…”
Fern flung out her hands. Go, she ordered her energy. Find it. She spun in a circle as the magic flew from her fingertips. She scanned the fields, trying to see something… Anything. Nothing looked different. Damn, it hadn’t—
Lady Soila drew a breath, and a second later, Beri shouted, “You found it!”
“Orb curse it,” Duffy muttered.
Lady Soila flicked her a haughty look, then pointed behind Fern. “Is that yer plant?”
A glow shone among the shrubs near the entrance. Fern ran to it and lifted her potted plant. Energy bathed the meadowsweet’s stem and leaves, and sparks of green pricked out of the leaf edges and along the stem. The entire plant looked like it was lined with tiny Christmas lights.
“Yes,” Fern breathed.

On a personal note:
Like Fern who restores a wildflower meadow in this story, I’ve been doing lots of gardening, in my yard and with a group from my neighborhood called Go Natives!
We applied for and got a state grant aimed at reducing runoff and erosion into the Chesapeake Bay. The grant, Virginia Trees for Clean Water, allowed us to purchase and install native shrubs in areas of shady, patchy grass that cannot contain excess water coming from the homeowner downspouts.
These flowering shrubs will establish a good root base in the damp soils, as well as serve 75 caterpillars of butterflies and moths, and 16 species of birds with their berries. We’re very excited to have both the water controlled and a better diversity of native plants in our neighborhood!
