It’s #BookQW and the ‘word’…can’t be conjured!

More from Chapter 22:

On his feet, Beri waved his hands. “Whatever it is, I’m sorry. I’ll leave you be.”

“Wait!” She grabbed his arm. “Beri, please!” Green sparks shot from her fingertips. She snatched back her hands, and the glow faded. “How do I stop it?” she pleaded.

His brow furrowed. “None of this is on purpose?”

“Of course not!” A tremor ran through her, the buzz building again.

“Aw, do’na fret yourself into another flash.” He took her hands into his, grimacing when more sparks flew. He moved his hands to her forearms. “Close off your finger channels.”

“I-I…” Can’t. Her trembling lips wouldn’t form the word.

“Magic is loose in you, newly so, I suppose,” he said in a low, soothing tone. “If you canna see it the way we do, I can only suggest to think your way through to taking charge of it.”

She closed her eyes to focus on Beri’s solid hold and his deep voice, a lulling comfort in this scariness. By blocking everything else, she felt the strange feeling of something racing slow. She concentrated on just that. An image of spring green rivulets came into her mind, a fine network of glowing channels running throughout her body.

This was magic? Her magic? How exciting—

Like a dam breaking, the small streams flooded into a raging river. Fern opened her eyes in time to see green burst from her fingers like water from fire hoses.

Beri ducked away. “Spells, I thought you had it.” He clasped her shoulders from behind. “Try again.”

Take a breath and settle yourself. Fern calmed her body until the buzziness left her skin and only dribbled from her fingertips. She had to close them.

She visualized sealing over each tip, but just as one was blocked, another began leaking. Sparks escaped, once a burst of them. Beri jerked each time. He didn’t drop his hold—thank goodness, because she still shook like her teeth would rattle loose.

Just when she thought she’d gotten them all, another flash shocked out.
