#GoForTheMoon

One of the neatest things about living close to to Washington DC–and along the Metro line–is being able to drop down to the National Mall and take advantage of free events.

Last night, my husband, a good friend and I watched the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum’s #GoForTheMoon production honoring Apollo 11’s 50th anniversary. The multi-media production included historical footage projected on screens as well as the Washington Monument.

The mall was packed, even with six showings offered over two nights.

Time to ‘lift-off’ was counted launch-style, with the rocket ready on the pad soon after dark.

The Apollo 11 then disappeared and was built through time-lapse photography. After a countdown, it took off across the monument!

The length of the show was 17 minutes, but well worth the trip down. Kudos to the staff of the Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum for conceiving of and developing this anniversary event. Catch it online, if you can!

Happy anniversary Apollo 11!
