I’ve shown our senior rescue dog on my social media, but only introduced him here once. Indulge me, because it’s Copper’s first #gotchaday, the anniversary of his adoption on January 16, 2021.
I’d wanted a dog for a while, but I also foster guinea pigs–and one of our penned areas is on the floor of the kitchen. Copper’s foster mom said he had no prey-drive and it’s true; he’s scared of them and will move away. He’s very cuddly and loves to sniff out things on walks. Thus, he’s been absolutely perfect for us.
The last year, we’ve had some downs that come with adopting an elderly pet–bouts of pneumonia and surgery to remove cancer. But the fun times have outweighed them. Two highlights were hiking in the mountains of Colorado (short, easy hikes–the altitude is not kind to those with compromised lungs!)…
and camping with a beach explore on a chilly but quiet weekend in November at our favorite state park, Westmoreland State Park along the Potomac River.
At age 12-or-so, Copper spends most of his days enjoying his walks, then following me from floor to floor of our house and sleeping. I had been writing on my laptop from any of our easy chairs, but after our son moved out, I took over his room, and Copper took over an ancestral family chaise lounge. What a life for a dog–my husband’s deceased mother would not be amused!
Yes, that’s an additional foster cage up here to care for two babies from a hoarding case. Copper handles sharing okay, but he’s happiest having his people to himself!
