Book Quote Wednesday ~ #bright on 7/24/2024

It’s #bookqw and Kenzie’s reply makes Mac’s day ‘bright’.

More from my story, All Spun Up, with roommates Kenzie and Mac:

I grinned. “You lucky dog! I love their doughnuts. I’d eat them every day if I could.”

Mac wagged a finger. “Better not let the Morning Moose sisters hear that. Their Marvelous Moose Blintzes have a following, including my Gramma Louise.”

I rolled my eyes. “Nothing compares to Donut Haus applesauce cake doughnuts.”

“Ah, the wholesome appeal of the humble cake doughnuts compared to those fancy blintzes.” He leaned a hip against the counter. “Are you saying you’d prefer a plain applesauce?”

I nodded and tucked a spoonful of yogurt into my mouth to keep it busy.

“It’s like choosing trucks over hybrids,” he said in complete deadpan.

Um, maybe we weren’t still talking about doughnuts? Mac drove a truck, and the blond college bartenders drove a hybrid. I could play this game. “It’s like choosing cowboys over computer geeks.” Which both the bartenders were. And Mac’s family ran a ranch on the plains outside of Loveland. When not jogging, he wore a cowboy hat with his western shirts and tight jeans.

He stared at me.

Oh crap…where had I gone with that one? I couldn’t get involved with him. If it fell apart or became awkward in any way, I’d lose my affordable rent. For that, I could live with five of us sharing one bathroom, no air conditioning and window screens that let in the mayflies.

Mac gulped some water. “Applesauce cake is the special of the day tomorrow. Don’t you have off? Want to split a half dozen?”

I clenched my glass while Kenzie’s big brown eyes widened as if I’d offered her a steak…or a pie, or something that certainly wasn’t doughnuts. Her tongue traced her bottom lip, and my thoughts dove south.

No! Not now, not in running shorts, and not when she hadn’t even answered. In desperation, I ordered my thoughts to work—cats, dogs, the endless notes and files. I blurted, “I mean, I have the day off, so…”

Only because I’d wrangled a vacation day to match her days off two weeks ago.

“Yeah,” she mumbled, her voice husky.

Thank you, Fate.

“That’d be nice. Fun.” Kenzie scooped into her yogurt again, grinning brightly. “You hit me in a weak area. As if I could say no.”

“Nope.” I laughed, mostly in relief she hadn’t refused, as she had a casual pizza invite last week. “No way you could, not after that buildup.” Good. I’d take her for doughnuts. Then I’d suggest a hike in the Park…
