Book Quote Wednesday ~ #cry on 5/14/2025

It’s #BookQW and tough Coral won’t ‘cry’ over her losses.

More from Chapter 4:

“Sorry, love,” Pop said to Coral, “but the quash is the only way your mother and I can have easy minds while we’re so far from you this week.” He laid a hand on her shoulder to lock down her magic.

Biting her lip, she shifted her energy to its core positions, and her father’s magic followed. One by one, it coated each core with an electrical wall that solidified with a snap, sealing it. Emptiness filled her gut as her eyes filled with tears. Curse it all. She would not cry.

The last core clicked shut, and the quash was complete. She could feel her magic inside her, but she couldn’t use it.

Pop slid both arms around her and gave her a hug. “Bye, love.”

“Bye, Pop.” She turned and hugged her mother as well. “Bye, Ma. Have a good time in the Mediterranean.”

With the tears burning again, she climbed the ladder into the warming fall day, picked up her bundle of knotted bags and descended their gangway. Squaring her shoulders, chin up, eyes ahead, Coral strode to the end of the dock and took the wooden walkway to the staircase up to the first level of town. Once on the balconylike wooden deckwalk that served as a street front, she avoided other pedestrians’ eyes by running a finger along the smooth railing and gazing across the protective cove.

The Peaceful Seas looked sad and lonely moored with the sails down. She scanned the western horizon, where two mountain peaks rose into the cloudy sky, all she could see of her home enclave, the Isle of Giuthas. Her magic quashed. Her family dispersed. Not staying on the ship. Not being able to go out with her friends. She felt…lost.
