It’s #BookQW and Fern wants an incredible ‘dream’!

More from Chapter 15:

Fern rubbed her throbbing temples.

Lady Mimosa pulled Fern’s hands down and held them in hers again. “This is naught to worry over.”

No, probably Mom didn’t love her less for lying, not if she’d kept quiet and continued to put charms on her. What would happen when they actually talked about it?

Lady Mimosa bent close. “You’ve come to help Lady Lark, and you have.”

“But what I thought we were doing…isn’t quite it.”

“Do you need to understand her plans to continue your work?”

“I-I don’t know. I still have things to finish, and with her gone, I’m on my own. Some of the inspectors don’t like what I’ve done, or…” Me, she wanted to say, but that would just make her sound like a whiner.

“Fern, do you know your own mind? What the Meadows should be?”

A year ago, her dream had been to see only wildflowers out every one of Hillux’s windows. Somewhere along the way, that vision had changed to a valley of plants feeding all sorts of insects, birds and wild animals. It wasn’t just about the plants anymore, but making a place for them to continue—both Gran and the wildlife. Blinking away a stray tear, she nodded.

Lady Mimosa smiled. “Good. Hold on to that image, because the Meadows will be that way, given time.” She rose. “Would you girls help me get dinner on?”

Later that night, Fern and Willow retreated to Willow’s room, where she made up a bed for Fern on a cushioned window seat, lent Fern some pajamas and got her a toothbrush.

Willow was settled upon her bed when Fern closed the door and got into her own bed.

Am I wasting my time when I have no magic? Will they even accept me when they find out? Maybe she should be researching colleges and scholarships this summer, like Mom kept suggesting. Thinking over her coming plans had made her darned fingers tingle again, so she laced them together around her pulled-up knees.

“So,” Fern started, her throat dry, “a person must be magical to oversee an island habitat?”

“Aye, to even live here.”

Oh. This was worse than she’d realized.
